Manage email open tracker

Use the Track email open rates setting to enable or disable the inclusion of the {{>open_tracker}} token in the Bazaarvoice emails. By default, this token is included in all Bazaarvoice email templates. The open tracker is a 1×1 transparent pixel embedded in the email. When a recipient opens the email and their email client loads the image, this triggers a request to the Bazaarvoice server, which records the email open event.

Bazaarvoice uses this event data to:

Turning this setting off will disable the tracker across all email types and email templates. Once disabled, the email open rates will no longer be recorded.

Email open-tracking compliance

By default, Bazaarvoice emails use the {{>open_tracker}} token to collect email open rate metrics. This tracker does not collect personally identifiable information (PII).

The Track email open rates setting allows you to enable or disable the inclusion of the {{>open_tracker}} token in emails. This setting helps you to meet with regional compliance requirements while continuing to use Bazaarvoice email templates.

Impact area
Description
Historical data
  • All historical open-rate metrics will remain visible within the Portal Insights dashboard; however, no new open events will be recorded during the period it is turned off.
  • To resume tracking, simply select Enabled under the same setting and redeploy, which will cause email open events to resume tracking from that point forward.
Note: This setting is specific to email open rates and has no impact on the Click-Through Rate (CTR) on links, which will continue to function normally.
Standard and In-mail templates
  • The {{>open_tracker}} token is removed from all email templates and email types.
  • Email open events are no longer recorded.
  • Open rate metrics display as 0% or become unavailable in the Portal Insights dashboard.
Custom email template
  • If the setting is disabled but the custom template still includes the {{>open_tracker}} token, the system returns a validation error prompting you to either remove the token or enable the setting.
  • If the setting is enabled but the custom template does not include the {{>open_tracker}} token, the system prompts you to add it or disable the setting.

  2. Open the email.
  3. Open the raw HTML source depending on your email client
    1. Gmail: Select the ellipsis icon next to the reply button and select Show original.
    2. Outlook: Access the message options and select View message source.
  4. Search the source text (using Ctrl + F or Cmd + F) for a.gif or type=Opened.
    1. If the setting is still enabled: You will find a tracking pixel <img> tag that looks like this: <img src="https://.../a.gif?cl=MessageLifecycle&type=Opened&messageId=...&client=...&source=letterpress" alt="" />
